New MSDS Requirement for Dangerous Goods at Nansha Port: What You Must Know
Shipping dangerous goods from China isn’t just about containers and booking space. You also need to follow the latest port rules. Recently, Nansha Port announced a new inspection requirement for all DG cargo, whether it’s imported or exported.
Missing this small but critical step could delay your shipment—or worse, send it for correction at the general inspection platform.
Let’s walk through what changed and how to stay compliant.
New Rule: Place MSDS Inside the Container
From now on, every DG container going through Nansha Port must have a printed copy of the MSDS placed inside the container. This applies to both import and export shipments, regardless of the dangerous goods class (IMO Class 2–9).
If the container is selected for inspection and the MSDS is missing, customs will redirect it to the general inspection platform (综台科) for correction. This not only causes delays but may also lead to additional handling charges.
What is an MSDS?
The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) contains important safety and handling information for hazardous or dangerous cargo. It shows chemical properties, risk levels, packaging rules, and emergency handling advice.
For DG shipments from China, this document is critical for both port safety and customs compliance.

Where Should the MSDS Go?
To comply with the new rule, always:
Print one extra MSDS copy for every shipment.
Place it inside the container, preferably near the door.
Use a Chinese or bilingual (Chinese-English) version.
Make sure it matches the cargo details on your documents.
This way, if your container is checked, customs officers can find the MSDS easily—and your cargo keeps moving.
Applies to Both Import & Export
Many shippers think this only affects DG exports from China, but that’s not the case. This rule applies equally to imports into Nansha. So whether your cargo is coming or going, don’t forget the MSDS.
